  • Course
  • 14 Lessons

Rude, sassy back talk is a big trigger button for a lot of parents. Being treated with disrespect often leads to anger and reactions that are disrespectful back!

This trauma‑informed parenting workshop teaches foster, kinship, and resource parents how to handle back talk and disrespect by understanding the cause of the behavior and knowing which tools to use for each. Beyond back talk, you will discover how to use clear, respectful communication to express concerns and set boundaries without yelling, lectures, or threats, to build stronger parent–child relationships.

Learning Objectives

Attend this Webinar to

  • Differentiate types of back talk and problem behavior.

    • You will be able to distinguish between respectful disagreement, rudeness, back talk, and defiance, and identify when behavior is unintentional (PU) versus on purpose (PO).

  • Apply a trauma-informed lens to children’s behavior and communication.

    • You will know how trauma, chronic stress, and skill deficits affect children’s emotional expression and back talk, so they can respond in ways that don’t further trigger children with a trauma history.

  • Use prevention strategies to reduce back talk and power struggles.

    • You will learn a Prevention Formula they can use 24/7, in any situation, with any child, to foster internal motivation, prevent many common problem behaviors, and decrease resistance and back talk.

    • You will know about self-regulation strategies to stay calm, co-regulate with children, and respond instead of react.

  • Communicate assertively and coach children in respectful expression.

    • You will use clear, assertive communication skills to express your concerns or expectations while preserving mutual respect and teaching healthier ways to express strong emotions.
