Trauma-Informed Problem Behavior Toolbox (Course #9 of 10 in the Advanced Foster-Adoptive Parents Toolshop® Bundle) - 2.5 hours)

In this recording of a live training for foster-adoptive parents, you will get clear criteria for knowing the difference between trauma-related behaviors, other unintentional behaviors, and intentional problematic behaviors.

Best of all, instead of just trying to fix or change the behavior or child, you'll learn how to interpret the child's behavioral signals to better understand the root cause of the behavior --- and address and resolve that. When the cause is gone, the behavior could disappear!

It also could take time to learn new skills and rewire their nervous system -- which the Keep Your Cool module of this course taught you how to do.

Most importantly, trauma is just one of the five causes of  “unintentional” misbehavior and there are only four reasons behind intentional problem behavior, so you'll learn how to identify and redirect each one—without escalations or unintentional payoffs. Then follow the “Four R’s of Effective Discipline” by using the 5 most effective tools for teaching self-discipline.

Learning Objectives

Complete this virtual workshop  and you will:
  • Understand the five causes of “unintentional” misbehavior and how to help children improve behavior that results from each challenge.
  • Understand how trauma shows up in behavior, why traditional approaches don't work and can make behavior  and trauma even worse!
  • Identify the four purposes behind intentional misbehavior and how to respond to each—without escalations or unintentional payoffs.
  • Recognize popular myths about discipline and punishment—it’s not a gray line!
  • Meet the “Four R’s of Effective Discipline” by using at least five effective techniques that are equally or more effective than timeouts, restrictions and logical consequences.
