Helping Foster Children with Their Feelings Before and After Visits

Having a full toolkit of skills to manage behavior and comfort and support kids during the “feelings overload” that can occur at the time of visitation is an important part of being a confident foster parent with a (mostly) relaxed and happy kid. Visits trigger all sorts of memories and reactions, and foster parents need the emotional bandwidth to help kids to identify emotions, express them, soothe themselves and learn from whatever arises as a result of both positive and negative visits. This session offers a smorgasbord of practical suggestions for taming the tempest and building trust with your child.

Meet Kim Langley, M.Ed.

Kim has been training for over 20 years, and was honored to be named the NEORTC trainer of the year. She has developed dozens of trainings, and this session on Helping Kids to Deal with Feelings Before and After Visits was developed to directly address expressed needs of foster parents around transitions between families. Topics addressed include:  Children's feelings (talking it out vs. acting it out) • The work of listening • Strategies for preparing for the visit • Strategies for return from visit • Anger in the child, the parent, the foster parent • Relaxation exercises  • Guided imagery for self-esteem • Coaching kids in appropriate self-expression • The public library as a resource for healing literature • Communication games and exercises for families
