Getting Back Talk? Let's Talk (Parents Tool Talk® DONE4U Solutions Webinar)

Rude, disrespectful, smart-mouthed, bratty kids who back talk. It seems kids everywhere these days think it's funny and normal to cuss and "diss" others --- and so do some adults.

Not you. You live by the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." You want and try to be respectful to your children and expect them to treat you with respect in return.

So it really bothers you when you get disrespectful reactions, smart-alecky attitudes, sassy comments, and non-verbal behavior like rolling eyes and under-the-breath digs.

Well, you aren't alone. Most parents have a trigger button for back talk. Why? Because most would have never talked to their parents this way! If they had, they might have gotten smacked across the face!
You don’t want to do that, but you also don’t like being disrespected.

So what are you to do?

Just Because "It works!" Doesn't Mean You Should Do It!

The most typical reactions to back talk can actually make matters worse!

Here are what moms at the highest-ranked “mommy blogs” recommended:
  • “How dare you talk to me that way? Go to your room!”
  • “You’d better get to your room on the count of 3 or you’re grounded!”
  • “I usually stop everything and will not let her move on until she rephrases her statement into a more agreeable tone, or until she apologizes, whatever the case may be.”
  • “His room currently has only his bed and desk, and a star chart. I removed EVERY SINGLE TOY and told him for every 3 days of stars (being polite, doing homework quickly, and getting dressed alone) he can have one toy.”
Do these sound familiar? Have you ever gotten advice like this? Have you ever tried these approaches? (Don’t feel guilty if you have; most of us will try just about anything to see what works.)
