Parents Toolshop® Leader Certification

Authorizes you to USE the proprietary Parents Toolshop® Universal Blueprint® System to COACH parents or TEACH it to others, as long as your license is Active.

We focus on the quality of our trainers and materials, not just the quantity of trainers and trainees. Our parenting programs and services get consistently positive results because of our standardized -yet-customizable research-based program curricula, outcome evaluation methods, and comprehensive leader certification programs. That's why the Toolshop® brand reputation is so stellar.

First, Are You in the Right Place?

Are you looking for:
  • A way to call yourself a parenting expert without any education or experience?
  • A cookie-cutter curriculum-in-a-box you can buy and follow with no training?
  • A reputable, proven-effective parenting program you can take and "run with," doing what you want with it?
  • A parenting program that offers a white label license to just add your business name, branding, and name to "make it yours"?
  • A quick way to make lots of money?
  • Someone else do all your marketing, deliver gigs to you on a silver platter, and then "hire" you with a guaranteed pay rate?
Then are in the wrong place. Don't waste your time reading any further or waste our time applying.

Next, is this the Right Program for YOU?

Are you tired of throwing your money down the drain because of unkept promises by trainers and coaches who didn't deliver?
  • We train all our leaders in the core competencies all parent coaches and educators need, because many degree programs don't teach them all and we accept non-degreed paraprofessionals.
  • We only teach research-based content and won't apologize for being research snobs. If you are one, too, then you'll appreciate that we don't certify "passionate" parents who only want a quick credential so they can share their opinions.
  • We establish standardized best practices for our coaches and trainers to follow, to get consistently positive results.
  • Are you willing to learn our content and the way we use and present it, because it gets consistently reliable outcomes? Of course, you can add research-based information, your personal stories of how you used and applied the skills you are coaching/teaching, and deliver it with your personal flair and style. *The rule of teaching a standardized curriculum is that you are "married to the content (or what you teach), but are only engaged to the delivery (or how you teach it). *
  • Are you willing to learn  the tools and use the resources and strategies we teach you to find your own clients and speaking engagements, whether that's through your current employer, your own private practice, or by joining our Leader team?
We always deliver what we promise. We are responsible to you, by providing you with the knowledge, skills and support you need to succeed. It's up to you to apply them as directed --- and take self-initiative to think outside the box --- to get the results you want. We don't hold your hand the whole time or do all the work for you, because we aren't responsible for your success --- YOU ARE!

OUR Relationship with YOU is Important, is Win/Win, and is for LIFE!

We don't accept just anyone into our Leader Certification programs, because we've had experiences we'd like to avoid in the future. We are looking to work with people who might be interested in a long-term relationship, because we give you lifetime support and training as long as your certification license is active.

Yes, we charge for our services, and if you conduct market comparisons like we have, you'll find we over-deliver and under-charge --- but that's not the point. The point is: We aren't just trying to make a sale. We truly and fully invest in YOU and your success. Our success is when YOU succeed; we're interdependent.

So we only want serious applicants who are willing to invest their time, effort, and resources to apply what our training and coaching teaches, so we both get a return-on-investment. Yes, it will involve a financial investment, not only in the training but in accessing resources to help you implement what you learn if you don't want to DIY (Do It Yourself).

We will fulfill our commitment to teaching you how to be successful and effective; it's your responsibility to fulfill your commitment to implement what you learn.
Carolina Perez is a San Diego teacher, parent, and foster parent who just taught her first Parents Toolshop® class after getting certified in 2023. Here is her experience, the parents' and how different both are from most parent educators' experiences.

My first class was SO good. They loved it! They didn't want to leave! There were laughs, there were tears, and I've already received a text from a mom saying she used what she learned the same night and couldn't believe her tween son's response. I couldn't sleep I was on such a high. I was helping kids, because I was helping their parents. They felt safe, they felt supported and they didn't leave with a lot of theory. They left with written down plans for the week.

5 Ways the Parents Toolshop® Curriculum and Leader Certification Process are Research-Based.

Whether a program is "research-based" is an important factor for anyone who's serious about becoming a professional parenting educator. You want to choose a curriculum that's the right fit for your intended audience and any special needs they have. It's also important to those who fund parent education programs and services. (Download a pdf with a fact sheet summary or detailed information about this section.)

So what does evidence- or research- based mean? "Evidence-" or "research-based" or "-informed" doesn't have one set definition. Here's the definition used by the Evidence-Based Programs Committee of the National Parenting Educators Network. Using this definition, The Parent's Toolshop® is evidence- or research-based in FIVE ways.

1. The Parents Toolshop® MODEL is Research-Based

  • Is a universal plan for effective parenting and delivering quality parent education programs.
  • Teaches parents to think for themselves and plan individualized solutions that meet their family’s needs.
  • Allows parents and parent educators the freedom to express their unique personal style, while using the Universal Blueprint® and its tools as a foundational guide.
  • Is effective with diverse populations and is a handy resource for custom-designing programs of various formats, populations, and settings.
  • Meets several national standards for research-based parent education programs and curricula, including:
    • It’s “Logic Model” was developed by and is consistent with The United Way of America’s standards
    • Meets all 8 “underlying principles” of the National Extension Parent Education Model (NEPEM) and has been implemented in all the “settings and population groups” suggested by NPEM.
    • Teaches 62% of the 182 indicators in all 5 domains and 96% of the 3 parenting or family-related ones in the Parent Education Core Curriculum Framework, from the Early Childhood Family Education program (2011, MN), which is adaptable to any age child.
    • Based on the criteria set forth by the “Parenting Curriculum Decision-Making Checklist” created by the U.S. Dept. Of Health and Human Services (2017), The Parents Toolshop® is a “Promising research-based program” that uses “solid research” methods to determine the outcomes of the program, namely a “descriptive” outcome evaluation study measuring pre/post skill improvement by the participants.
    • References, incorporates or teaches Domains 2, 3 and 4 of the NPEN Professional Competencies and meets NPEN's Para-Professional Competency Areas 1 & 2 of the National Parenting Education Network’s Parenting Educator Competencies Model.
"I am getting my first class formed, using The Parent's Toolshop®. I am excited most about the thoroughness of the book and the easy-to-visualize framework. I chose this book over other courses, because of the clarity and consistency with which it addresses an amazing range of parenting issues. In fact, by using the Universal Blueprint®, it addresses every possible parenting dilemma. I will be sharing this course with hundreds of parents in the my local schools and churches." --- Holly Anderson, M.Ed., RN, NCC, Therapist

2. The Parents Toolshop® CONTENT is Research-Based

The comprehensive Parents Toolshop® core curriculum is the result of a 10-year literature research project that involved reviewing hundreds of research-based parenting resources.

The only techniques/teachings that were accepted into the curriculum are those that are backed by long-term research showing their effectiveness.

These tools were collected, organized, and synthesized into a unique decision-making / problem-solving process that works as a totally-customizable parenting plan.

The first book was published locally just for class participants in 1992, was published nationally in 2000.  We celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first printing with a new shorter book for the public.

The Parent’s Toolshop® Award-Winning BOOK

  • Is a one-stop resource that combines the best research-based content and select teachings of dozens of  respected and trusted parenting pioneering theorists and authors, including: Alfred Adler, Louise Bates Ames and Frances L. Ilg, Barbara Coloroso*, Stephen R. Covey*, Dolores Curran, Donald Dinkmeyer & Gary McKay, Rudolf Dreikurs, Paul Ekman, Albert Ellis, Edele Faber and Elaine Mazlish, Jim Fay* and Foster Cline, Thomas Gordon, Alfie Kohn, Jane Nelsen*, Michael Popkin . . . and many more! [*] Note: Authors with an asterisk next to their name have endorsed The Parent’s Toolshop® book.
  • Is practical and user-friendly. Each chapter of The Parent's Toolshop® book defines terms, summarizes philosophy, describes how/when to use each skill, applies the skills in situations involving children ages 1-18, and provides practice exercises.

Lifetime Content Updates

  • We are constantly updating the original ©2000 The Parent's Toolshop® book, with each reprint, as new research emerges. Amazingly, although there have been some additions to the content, there has been only one change or correction (out of 456 pages!) Those and other updates are provided to each person who buys the book through us, the publisher (Ambris Publishing), through a free online course, with bonus videos, presentation slides, etc.
  • Now, a newer, shorter Jump Start Guide is available for class attendees with our 25th Anniversary updates for the Next Generation of Parents Toolshop® trainees.
  • Both Parents Toolshop® class "text" books are customizable to meet the needs of the current participants. Instructors can also supplement programs with research-based resources that have consistent teachings.

The Parent's Toolshop® is Easy-to-Read for Parents AND Advanced Enough for Professionals

When Jack Canfield, Co-author of the New York Times #1 best-selling Chicken Soup for the Soul® series, read The Parent's Toolshop®, he endorsed it saying:

"This is a fabulous resource for any parent. If you read this comprehensive book, you’ll likely have enough information to qualify for a B.A. in parenting from any university!"

This is why The Parent's Toolshop® has been used as a college textbook by multiple universities and the Advanced Parents Toolshop® T.I.P.S. (Tools for Improving Parenting Success) course is the pre-requisite course for all PTLeader Certification Training Applicants to completet.

HOWEVER, all our books, resources, and courses are worded at a fifth-grade reading level, so we've seen (and have outcome data showing) that even parents from low education backgrounds can read and understand the "advanced" teachings in Parent's Toolshop® content.

3. The Parent’s Toolshop® EVALUATION Methods

  • Utilize multiple evaluation methods, including a pre/post outcome-focused skill assessment tool, program evaluation, and even a six-month follow up evaluation.
  • Were developed by an United Way PhD Evaluation consultant specifically for Parent's Toolshop® programs and served as a model program for United Way of America. Other skill-based prevention programs have repurposed our skill assessment and outcome-evaluation tools.  (See sample scale below.)

1. The Parents Toolshop® MODEL is Evidence-Informed

The Parent’s Toolshop® offers a  unique universal parenting plan that is a simple yet empowering decision-making, problem-solving MODEL called "The Universal Blueprint®."

This MODEL:
  • Teaches parents to think for themselves and plan individualized solutions that meet their family’s needs.
  •  Meets several national standards for effective parent education programs and curriculum, because it has sound theoretical principles that have evidence of long-term effectiveness. These include:
    • The National Extension Parent Education Model (NEPEM).
    • National Parenting Education Network's (NPEN) Professional and Paraprofessional Competencies in Domains 1 & 2.
This proprietary system is so effective that PTLeaders use and model the system and its tools while coaching and training parents!
Standardized skill assessment rating scale from Parents Toolshop® programs, used as a model by United Way of America for other skill-improvement programs.

Here is the SHORT list of Outcome Results

"There are many parenting classes in the Dayton area and we fund most of them. Our statistics show that none have even come close to achieving the results your classes achieve on a consistent basis." --- Linda Taylor, Community Initiatives Program, United Way of Greater Dayton

30+ years later, our outcome results have remained consistent! This is likely due to the screening, training, practice and supervision we give our trainers. (Get details in the summary of this "5 Ways..." section or full outcome study report.)

4. The Parents Toolshop® Leader TRAINING Process

Before "parent coaching" became so popular, we used to include both coaching and teaching in one training. Today, there are professionals who want to only do coaching and not teaching, but all trainers need to know how to coach, consult, do problem-solving with their students in and out of the classroom, and conduct group support sessions, so the Advisor training must be a part of their training. The first part of this section looks at the 4th way our process is evidence-based. Then you'll see links to the two different training programs as we describe the steps you take.

WHO Can Apply?

Parents Toolshop® Leader Applicants can be Parent Education Professionals or Paraprofessionals.

“Parenting education is a field that encompasses knowledge and skills that stem from a diverse set of disciplines representing multiple perspectives about children, parents, parent-child relationships, family life, and parenting across the lifespan. Parenting education practice has roots in several disciplines including child development; early childhood education; adult development, learning, and education; family studies; psychology; sociology; health care; and social work. As such, parenting education is practiced in multiple arenas by practitioners who have typically been prepared in a specific discipline with a knowledge-base and mindset that is consistent with their preparation.” Parenting Educator Competencies: A Resource Document for the Field of Parenting Education, ©2020, NPEN (National Parenting Education Network)
“Paraprofessional parenting educators typically enter the parenting education role differently from the professional parenting educator.  Paraprofessionals may have little or no formal education or training in parenting educator competency areas, but they typically have a wealth of applicable life experiences.” Paraprofessional Parenting Educator Competencies: A Resource Document for the Field of Parenting Education, ©2021 NPEN (National Parenting Education Network)

“It is not expected that parenting educators will have in-depth knowledge and have mastered all of the skills related to the competencies listed here. Parenting educators will likely acquire competencies and proficiency over time through formal and informal education and experience. The competencies they acquire and hone are often tailored to their role as a parenting educator and the audiences they serve. Roles and audiences can change over time requiring parenting educators to revisit the competencies needed to be effective.” Parenting Educator Competencies: A Resource Document for the Field of Parenting Education, ©2020, NPEN (National Parenting Education Network)

The Parents Toolshop® Leader Certification Training Process Meets National Standards for Core Competencies

  • Provides instructor screening, preparation, training, mentoring, monitoring, supervision and ongoing support that meets the standards set forth in the National Extension Parenting Educator Framework (NEPEF) for evaluating the qualities, attitudes, skills and training all parent educators need.
  • Directly teaches 75% (58 of 77) content areas identified in “Core Knowledge for Parent Educators and Professionals Who Work with Families” (© 2000) by The Texas Registry of Parent Educator Resources (Texas ROPER). Professionals with related degrees & resource management training meet all 77 areas.
  • Teaches directly or incorporates teachings from all the competencies identified in NPEN’s two competency documents. Specifically:
    • All 22 competencies in 4 domains for paraprofessional parent educators (non-degreed)
    • All 28 competencies in 4 domains for professional parent educators

Where Does this fit in the OVERALL Toolshop® Leader Certification Training PROCESS?

What is the Training PROCESS?

It's important that all  PTLeaders provide consistently top-quality services, despite the diverse education, training and life experience individuals in the field may bring to their role. Therefore, the PTLeader Certification Training and Supervision process provides instructor screening, preparation, training, mentoring, monitoring, supervision and ongoing support that meets the following criteria:
  • Assures consistent quality programming by using a multi-step training process. Trainers get practice, demonstrate mastery of skills, and meet performance standards before moving to the next level.
  • Teaches a wide variety of critical skills parenting educators need to master, including: effective parenting, group facilitation, ethics, marketing, program development and evaluation.
  • Can be completed as an on-line, self-directed course with personalized support. (Live in-person training is available when 4+ people want trained at the same time and a training location is provided.)
  • Is non-exclusive. Instructors can provide training as non-profit employees, private practice professionals, or part of the Parents Toolshop® trainer team.

ONCE CERTIFIED, MAINTAIN AN "ACTIVE" LICENSE

Although “lifetime” certification refers to the training  RTLeaders are eligible to receive, as long as they are an Active leader, the “license” to use, teach, or create content based on the UB® and Toolshop® teachings is renewed annually. The Standards & Practices Manual provides specific details, but here's a quick summary:

You Maintain "Active" License Status by demonstrating four criteria:
  1. You document your use of your certification (there are some minimum performance requirements, so your skills stay fresh.)
  2. Performance as determined by evaluations and skills assessments for coaching and classes.
  3. Engagement and communication with Parents Toolshop® and/or RTITI, by providing annual reports and attending the minimum required leader support webinars each year.
  4. Continuing education in the parenting field, which can include watching/utilizing Toolshop® training materials.
If you meet these "minimum performance standards" requirements to maintain an "Active" license, you should earn more than enough to cover your monthly fees for support & coaching services you receive.

Standardized Training Provides Quality Assurance Control Measures

"I am really impressed by your instructor certification process. I appreciate that you want (and need) to be know who you are training and how they are using your materials. I've been involved in other training programs where instructors go out and train others — but add their own "twist" — and then wonder why it doesn't work as well for them!"  --- Janet Mease, Early Intervention Specialist, US Naval Hospital, Okinawa, Japan.

5. ONGOING Training, Support, Supervision

As long as a trainer retains "Active" status, Parents Toolshop® provides:
  • Ongoing training, support, resources and networking with other parent educators.
  • Monitoring by a peer-review Standards & Practices committee, which develops, approves, and oversees each trainee's progress, evaluating and revising processes ongoing.
  • Provides the PTLeader Team, who train for/through RTITI, not their employer or own business, additional training and services described in the NPEN Professional Competencies "Administration / Supervision Domain," including:
    • Program design and evaluation
    • Supervision (including a clinical consultant)
    • Marketing Strategizing
    • Collaboration and referrals with other organizations

What OUR PARENT EDUCATORS Think About Parents Toolshop®?

We have hundreds of testimonials from the parents we serve --- from diverse backgrounds worldwide --- raving about our classes (online, in person, one time, and whole series), our trainers, and the results they received. In addition to the testimonials from the Parents Toolshop® Leaders you saw above, here are a few more.
"As a parent, educator and program administrator, I have found the tools I learned from Parent's Toolshop® beneficial in all interpersonal situations.  Parent's Toolshop® is certainly an excellent program for developing parenting skills but it also provides solid strategies useful in management, supervision and even marriage!" --- Lynn Stephens, Chief Operations Officer, Okaloosa-Walton Child Care Services, A Resource and Referral Agency, Certified Parent’s Toolshop® Trainer, Ft. Walton Beach, FL

(Lynn's entire staff received PT GF Certification Training in 2001)
Belinda Long, B.Ed., Ohio

Group Facilitator training was very interactive, high-energy, and action-packed. The blueprint works in a progression, and so how does how to present. The 3 steps to present, (1) Definition/Theory, (2) 5 Star Tools (3) Practice 5 Star Tools, was very helpful as an outline.

Mary Conlon, B.S., M.A., M.Ed., Ohio

Deanna Todd, M.A., Ohio

I continue to be impressed with the integrity and completeness of the system. I’m looking forward to helping parents increase their effectiveness and reach their long-term parenting goals.

Millie McNabb, Pocatella, ID

Joy Knight, Washington State

The Parent’s Toolshop® philosophy and overall presentation is the most comprehensive, consistent, and impressive I’ve seen. It is well organized, well-received by those who use it, and conveys a sense of joy and commitment from the author

Pam Bonsper, M.A, Carmel, CA

“I like The Parent's Toolshop® because it is such a flexible and well-designed curriculum, and can be used in a variety of settings and with different populations. Parents enjoy the activities and have fun while learning to become more effective parents. The program is very well-organized, very thorough, and addresses all parenting issues. I have taught hundreds of parents using this wonderful program and have received positive feedback from all of them.

Nancy Ordonia, BSW, Niceville, FL

Damara Simmons, BS Elem Ed, Georgia

I've had great success teaching The Parent's Toolshop® to a variety of clients.  The book is easy to read, the material is practical and the information is fun to present. Parents enjoy the personal stories in the book from the author and graduates. The exercises at the end of each chapter are helpful to do before using the "tools" in real-life situations. I've worked with several different parenting resources, and The Parent's Toolshop® is the best by far.  It has EVERYTHING all wrapped up into one book!  --- Cambra Mockabee, LSW, Correctional Program Specialist, Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, Certified Parent’s Toolshop® Trainer, Springboro, Ohio

Cambra Mockabee, LSW, Ohio

Trevor Farley, School Teacher, South Africa

The videos {in the training} are a win/win situation for both Jody and the student. Her videos can teach one person at a time. Jody is shown teaching a training class so it is as if you are in the class. But rather than having to remember everything she said in a session, you have the videos to refer to over and over again. In answering the workbook questions, a student is required to listen carefully to everything said. If you miss something, you can always pause and rewind. When I prepare a lesson in the future, I can review how Jody presented it and then revise it to fit my capabilities and needs. I wondered if the videos could fully meet my training needs. I am happy to report, they do.
